What is Ohanami?
はるになると、にほんでは さくらの はなが たくさん さきます。
Haru ni naru to, Nihon de wa sakura no hana ga takusan sakimasu.
In spring, many cherry blossoms bloom in Japan.
さくらの きせつには、かぞく や ともだち と いっしょに こうえん に いきます。
Sakura no kisetsu ni wa, kazoku ya tomodachi to issho ni kōen ni ikimasu.
During cherry blossom season, people go to the park with family and friends.
そこで、あおい シート を しいて、たべもの を たべたり、おさけ を のんだり します。
Soko de, aoi shīto o shiite, tabemono o tabetari, osake o nondari shimasu.
There, they lay out a blue sheet, eat food, and drink alcohol.
これを「おはなみ」と いいます。
Kore o “ohanami” to iimasu.
This is called “ohanami” (cherry blossom viewing).
おはなみの「お」は、はなみを ていねいに いった いいかた です。
Ohanami no “O” wa, hanami o teinei ni itta iikata desu.
The “O” in “Ohanami” is a polite way to say “Hanami” (cherry blossom viewing).

The Meaning and Origin of “Hana yori Dango”
「はなよりだんご」という ことば が あります。
“Hana yori dango” to iu kotoba ga arimasu.
There is a phrase called “Hana yori Dango.”
この いみ は、きれいな はな よりも、おいしい たべもの の ほうが だいじ、ということ です。
Kono imi wa, kirei na hana yori mo, oishii tabemono no hō ga daiji, to iu koto desu.
This means that food is more important than beautiful flowers.
おはなみ でも、さくら より たべもの が だいすきな ひと が います。
Ohanami demo, sakura yori tabemono ga daisuki na hito ga imasu.
Even at hanami, some people love food more than the cherry blossoms.
この ことから、「はなよりだんご」という ことば が できました。
Kono koto kara, “hana yori dango” to iu kotoba ga dekimashita.
This is how the phrase “Hana yori Dango” was created.
